Intranets and standards

On homogenous intranets and the need for web standards.

If your intranet has a thoroughly homogenous setup, then you might not care about being standards compliant. The danger then is that you upgrade the version of the browser on your corporate distribution and find that some of the behaviours you used to rely on have gone away. You must then choose whether to stick to an old version for which there are no security patches, or to try and rejig the code to work on the new version. It surprises me that people will make this hop from - say - IE 4 to 5 to 6, each time making it work in the latest version, but not making the bigger - but overall oft simpler - jump to making it work in browsers generally.

There's also the question of what you do to help people in your organisation who need to use screen readers or other accessibility aids.

A more involved, backed-up argument is wanted here, with testamonials from people who have jumped through such hoops.
